All will succumb to the V-Gas!
I've dreamed of making Zombie APEs ever since first playing
Incursion in
2009 and seeing the card Rackley Hated His Mask:
It always felt like there should have been a Zombie APE included in the game
since it was anti-thematic when an APE gets resurrected as a basic unarmored
Sturmzombie.
Well today that changes!
I made some zombified APEs and Drop Troopers. I tried to make each model tell a story:
The first APE was gunned down. One of his breathing hoses got severed in the hail of lead. His corpse was quickly reanimated by ambient V-Gas.
The second APE was overwhelmed in melee by Sturmzombies. His mask got ripped off and so he, too, was reanimated.
The first Drop Trooper was overwhelmed by Sturmzombies. After being
resurrected, he took down one of his own squadmates (as evidenced by the
frantic pattern of bulletmarks and glancing headshot). He's coming for you
next!
The second trooper doesn't even have a scratch. He should have kept his mask tight ...
Conversion Details
My main goal was to have the models look as dynamic as possible, like they are
running towards their prey. To achieve this I used a mishmash of different
body parts from the APE & Drop Trooper ranges:
-
Zombie APE 1 – The body is from
APE Sarge. The
arms and backpack are standard Grunt equipment.
-
Zombie APE 2 – The body is from
Grunt APE #1.
The arms and backpack are standard Grunt equipment. I might have sanded down
the right arm's shoulder so it sticks away from the body more.
-
Zombie Drop Trooper 1 – The body and right arm are from
Feldwebel. I had
to sand down most of the arm's shoulder at an angle for it to fit the way it
does, since normally the arm sticks out at a 45 degree angle. The left arm
is from the
Drop Trooper Sniper.
-
Zombie Drop Trooper 2 – All parts are from
Drop Trooper #1
except the head. I cut off the STG-44 from his right hand.
Three of the heads are from Secrets of the Third Reich. I used both packs: SOTR06 Zombie Heads and SOTR07 German Zombie Heads in Helmets.
The bases are from Fenris Games and Dragon Forge Design. They are detailed
here:
Incursion Scenic Bases.
Fluff
The SWD commonly sends in an assistant scientist after a victorious battle to reanimate the fresh corpses. The scientist removes all the gas masks and then floods the area with V-Gas.
Likewise, the same is done in areas where the SWD lost, once the Allies have moved on and left the area unguarded. However, this strategy became less effective once the Allies caught on and started to decapitate the corpses of their own soldiers after each battle.
In cases where the SWD lost the battle but know the casualties were high
for the Allies, they sometimes launch an immediate retaliatory strike with
whatever forces can be scrambled. The tactic is to overwhelm the area with
the most casualties and reanimate them. The fresh zombies being enough to
turn the tables and seal the victory. The SWD uses every measure possible to
delay the Allies from decapitating their fallen soldiers while the
retaliatory force is on the way, such as cutting the power and flooding the
tunnels with water.
