SWD – Panzeraffe #2

Because one isn't enough!

Left: Reaper / Right: Official

Back: Panzeraffen / Front: Kriegaffen

In case it wasn't clear, this model will be used as a Panzeraffe for the German SWD faction of the Incursion boardgame.

This model is APE-X from Reaper Miniatures. I bought the Bones Plastic version since it was much cheaper than the older metal version. However, the metal version is still worth checking out just to see the awesome photos of it painted.

As I was collecting those links, I discovered there's a new APE-X MK II which looks incredible. It seems my work here isn't done yet!

The base is from Fenris Games. Learn more about my Incursion Scenic Bases here.

Painting Guide

I painted this Panzeraffe the same exact way I painted the Kriegaffen. I actually painted them at the same time. Check out the Kriegaffen post and scroll down to see the painting guide.

SWD – Kriegaffen

Most gorillas put through the Panzeraffe project get rejected because they don't grow large enough, pass a cognitive threshold, or any of a dozen other reasons. These gorillas are repurposed into heavy shock troops known as Kriegaffen. The last thing an APE wants to see coming out of the darkness is an even large ape sprinting towards him.

These are unofficial models I'm adding to the German SWD faction of the Incursion boardgame.

The hulking Panzeraffe is so cool that I just had to add more super-gorillas to the Nazi forces. Between my 2 Panzeraffes, my zombie monkeys, and now these, the SWD have quite a force of simians!

Someday I'd like to add chimpanzees with guns. Miniature Figurines happen to sell Soviet Apemen that would do the trick ... (Historical note: Germans on the eastern front loved the PPSh so much that it became the second most common SMG used in the German army!)

Here's where I got the models from:

  • The gorilla with the power pack is Markus from Dust Tactics: Operation SeeLöwe. I was able to buy him for $5 US from Frontline Games. The other gorilla with leather straps is a second copy of Markus that I converted (see Conversion Details).
  • The other three gorillas are from Dust 1947 – Blutkreuz Korps Gorilla Squad. You can also find them from the older Dust Tactics game under the name called Axis Gorillas or Blutkreuz Korps Kampfaffen Squad.
  • The bases are from Fenris Games, Dragon Forge Design, and Gadzooks Gaming. They are detailed here: Incursion Scenic Bases.

Conversion Details

I only converted one model. I took a second copy of Markus and cut off his power pack and power cables. Then I sculpted fur and leather straps on his back. I'm not very experienced with sculpting, but was very pleased with the result!

New Posts Incoming!

Sorry for the lack of any posts for the last 8 months. I painted several groups of models back in October and November, but had to pack everything away for a move before I was able to take any pictures.

It took me a while to get back into painting once I unpacked. I've been steadily painting away for the last 3 months and recently took loads of pictures. So I'll be posting some nice updates in the coming days & weeks.

For starters, I've updated the SWD – Kriegmaschine-Z post with pictures of my painted models! I've also added a basic Painting Guide in that post for anyone who's curious how I painted them.

Here's what's coming:

  • SWD – Kriegaffen
  • SWD – Panzeraffe #2
  • SWD – Zombie Dogs
  • SWD – Sturmzombies
  • Lucky 7th – Sentinels
  • Lucky 7th – Comanche Mechs
  • Incursion – Generator Control Panels (GCPs)
  • Incursion – Doors
